Since Microsoft Windows 3.1 was introduced, Windows users have had the capability to display and print TrueType fonts. Because TrueType fonts are self-contained and portable, the only thing preventing the easy interchange of fonts between the Mac and Windows is how the fonts are stored.
The Mac stores its TrueType fonts as 'sfnt' resources, along with the 'FOND' resource that all Mac fonts must have, and Windows stores its TrueType fonts in .TTF files (files with a .TTF extension). Except for the location, the actual font data is completely compatible. TTConverter is designed to move this font data between the 'sfnt' resources and .TTF files so it is possible to use TrueType fonts created in one OS with the other.
Using It
You can convert files two ways: by choosing the Convert command in the File menu and selecting the file, or by dragging files onto it in the Finder (you must be using System 7 to do this). TTConverter will automatically convert the file(s) into the other format. You can watch the progress of the conversion in the window that appears.
When converting a .TTF file, the new file’s name will be constructed from the font’s actual name and style. This is to compensate for the Finder’s inability to rename fonts—otherwise you’d have fonts with names like LSANTWBI.
Options
The Options menu provides several options which you may want to use when converting fonts. The first two items (Delete Windows .TTF files and Delete Mac TrueType files) let you turn on or off the automatic deletion of files after they are converted.
If you have Convert .TTF filenames turned on, the file resulting from the conversion of a Mac TrueType file will have an MS-DOS compatible name. That is, it will be eight characters long with the .TTF extension.
Registration
You may try out TTConverter for up to 15 days before you are required to pay the shareware fee of $10 (use the included form). You are not required to pay anything (and are, in fact, incouraged) to distribute TTConverter. In other words, make as many copies as you want, give them to whoever you want, but pay for it if you use it.
